Shopify technical audit for a premium Ayurvedic skincare brand
An access-based technical audit of a well-built premium store, and why the recommendation was a monthly maintenance plan rather than a rebuild.
Prepared for a prospective client in June 2026. The brand is not named because the engagement did not go ahead.
The store
A premium Ayurvedic skincare, wellness and gifting brand on a paid Shopify theme (Prestige), with strong ingredient-led storytelling and a heavy app stack for reviews, checkout, shoppable video and login.
How the audit was done
- Theme and code review with Shopify access
- Public storefront review on mobile and desktop
- File-level observations on theme structure
- Performance, accessibility, compliance and third-party checks
What we found
- Inline event handlers in several theme files
- Font preload tags commented out
- Third-party scripts (reviews, checkout, video, login, Meta Pixel, GA4) weighing on performance
- A customer-account table-row navigation pattern that needs accessibility work
- Gift card copy and print interactions that could be improved
- Deprecated theme features: privacy banner and colour swatch configuration
- Console warnings left on in production
- Missing preconnect hints for third-party services
Recommendation
The store was production-ready and visually strong, so a rebuild was not justified. The recommendation was a monthly maintenance retainer covering banner and campaign refreshes, hygiene checks, minor fixes, mobile and desktop QA, offer consistency checks and app display checks, with the technical items above phased in by priority.
FAQs
- Why recommend maintenance instead of a rebuild?
- The theme foundation was sound and the store already looked and worked well. The issues found were hygiene and performance items that are cheaper and safer to fix in phases.
- Why is the brand not named?
- This was an assessment for a prospective client and the engagement did not go ahead, so we describe the findings without identifying the store.
